November 30, 1950
That fall of 1950, gas ran $0.27 a gallon and Truman was in the White House — and Allied troops had just recaptured Seoul from North Korean forces, three months after the invasion began. On the radio, "Goodnight Irene" by Gordon Jenkins and The Weavers was the song everyone knew, while "All About Eve" was drawing crowds at movie theaters across the country. The New York Yankees won the World Series that October, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in four straight games, and the FCC issued its first license to broadcast television in color, awarding it to CBS.
