That fall of 1951, gas ran $0.27 a gallon and Truman was in the White House — the Soviet Union had just detonated its second atomic bomb in two years, a development the White House said directly undercut the peace intentions Stalin had been publicly voicing. On the newsstands, James Jones's novel "From Here to Eternity" was sitting atop the fiction bestsellers, and on television, "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts" was the show American households kept coming back to each week. The New York Yankees took the World Series that October by defeating the New York Giants, the same fall that Chinese Communist forces marched into Lhasa and completed their takeover of Tibet, effectively ending the country's independence.
