November 6, 1952
That fall of 1952, gas ran $0.27 a gallon and Truman was in the White House — the presidential campaign was in full swing, with Eisenhower drawing crowds of 35,000 in South Carolina as he challenged Truman's administration in the final stretch before November's election. On television, "I Love Lucy" was the show Americans gathered around each week, while Patti Page's "I Went to Your Wedding" sat at the top of the music charts. The New York Yankees defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series to claim the championship, the same fall that "The Greatest Show on Earth" had taken home the Oscar for Best Picture earlier that year.
