The federal minimum wage stood at $1.25/hr that summer of 1963, and the Dow Jones sat at 762 — the U.S. and Soviet Union were on the verge of signing a landmark nuclear test ban treaty, a significant step in Cold War diplomacy that summer. At the movies, "Cleopatra" was drawing crowds across the country, while on television, "The Dick Van Dyke Show" had just taken home the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. On June 16, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova launched aboard Vostok 6 and became the first woman to travel to space, completing 48 orbits before returning to Earth three days later.
