By the winter of 1964, Johnson was in the White House and the federal minimum wage stood at $1.25/hr — the United States Surgeon General issued his landmark report declaring that smoking was hazardous to health, marking the first official federal acknowledgment of the link between cigarettes and disease. On television, "The Dick Van Dyke Show" was winning Emmy Awards for comedy while Americans were reading John le Carré's "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" at the top of the fiction bestseller list. The Cleveland Browns claimed the NFL championship that season, and American athletes had just returned from Innsbruck, Austria, where the United States finished the Winter Olympics with 6 medals, including 1 gold.
