Gas cost $0.30 a gallon in the spring of 1964, and the Dow Jones stood at 874 — a civil rights debate was consuming the Senate floor, now in its eighth week, as supporters pushed for a cloture vote to end the Southern filibuster against the landmark civil rights bill. On the cultural front, "The Beverly Hillbillies" was drawing some of the largest television audiences in the country, while John le Carré's "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" sat at the top of the fiction bestseller list. The Boston Celtics claimed the NBA championship by defeating the San Francisco Warriors, the same spring that Jerrie Mock landed her plane in Columbus, Ohio, becoming the first woman to complete a solo flight around the world.
