That fall of 1965, gas ran $0.31 a gallon and Johnson was in the White House — the United States was deepening its military commitment in Vietnam, with North Vietnamese regulars and American battalions clashing in the field as the war expanded beyond any easy resolution. On the cultural front, Americans were humming "Yesterday" by The Beatles and packing theaters to see "The Sound of Music," while Tuesday nights meant settling in for "Bonanza" on NBC. The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed the World Series over the Minnesota Twins that October, the same season NASA's Gemini 6 and Gemini 7 completed the first rendezvous of two crewed spacecraft in orbit, a landmark demonstration of the techniques that would be needed to reach the Moon.
