By the winter of 1966, Johnson was in the White House and the federal minimum wage stood at $1.25/hr — and the debate over Vietnam was shaping the political moment, with Senate Democrats publicly urging President Johnson to extend the bombing pause and pursue negotiations to end the conflict. On television, "Bonanza" remained the top-rated show in the country, while The Beatles held the number one spot on the charts with "We Can Work It Out." The Green Bay Packers claimed the NFL championship that season, and on February 3, the Soviet unmanned spacecraft Luna 9 made the first controlled rocket-assisted landing on the Moon, a landmark moment in the space race.
