Gas cost $0.32 a gallon in the spring of 1966, and the Dow Jones stood at 786 — a United Nations treaty to keep the Moon open to all nations was among the major international discussions shaping American foreign policy. On television, "Bonanza" continued to draw the country's largest audiences each week, while "(You're My) Soul And Inspiration" by The Righteous Brothers held the top spot on the music charts. The Boston Celtics defeated the Los Angeles Lakers to claim the NBA championship, and in March, NASA's Gemini 8 mission made history when astronauts Neil Armstrong and David Scott completed the first successful docking of two spacecraft in orbit.
