That fall of 1966, gas ran $0.32 a gallon and Johnson was in the White House — the Vietnam War was escalating, with President Johnson publicly offering a U.S. withdrawal only after North Vietnamese forces pulled back first. On the radio, the Four Tops were sitting at number one with "Reach Out I'll Be There," while audiences were still packing theaters for "Doctor Zhivago," the sweeping epic that had dominated the box office since the previous winter. The Baltimore Orioles capped the season by sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers in four straight games to win the World Series, and NASA closed out its Gemini program when "Gemini 12" splashed down safely in the Atlantic, with Buzz Aldrin logging over five hours of spacewalks and putting to rest earlier concerns about astronaut fatigue during extravehicular activity.
