The federal minimum wage stood at $1.40/hr that summer of 1967, and the Dow Jones sat at 906 — while a U.N. cease-fire watch along the Suez Canal remained deadlocked after the Six-Day War had reshaped the Middle East in less than a week. On the radio, The Association held the number one spot with "Windy," and at the movies, audiences were turning out for the James Bond film "You Only Live Twice." On August 6, Cambridge astronomer Jocelyn Bell recorded the first data that would lead to the discovery of pulsars — an entirely new class of rapidly rotating neutron stars — marking one of the most significant finds in the history of astronomy.
