Gas cost $0.34 a gallon in the spring of 1968, and the Dow Jones stood at 944 — a the U.S. government publicly rebuffed North Vietnam's proposal to hold peace talks in Warsaw, signaling that negotiations over the conflict in Southeast Asia remained at a standstill. On television, "The Andy Griffith Show" continued to draw some of the largest audiences in the country, while Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey" held the number one spot on the pop charts for weeks running. The Boston Celtics defeated the Los Angeles Lakers to claim the NBA championship, and on March 30, future recording star Celine Dion was born in Charlemagne, Quebec, in what would later be recognized as the birth of one of the best-selling music artists in history.
