That fall of 1968, gas ran $0.34 a gallon and Johnson was in the White House — the Soviet Union's occupation of Czechoslovakia was drawing sharp condemnation from NATO allies, who warned Moscow against further destabilizing moves in Europe. On the radio, "Hey Jude" by The Beatles dominated the charts, while audiences packed theaters to see "Rachel, Rachel," and families gathered around the TV each week for "The Andy Griffith Show." The Detroit Tigers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series, and American athletes brought home 45 gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City.
