A Big Mac cost $0.58 that summer of 1970, and the Dow Jones sat at 839 — just months after the House voted 272 to 132 to lower the voting age to 18, setting the stage for the 26th Amendment. On the radio, Three Dog Night's "Mama Told Me (Not To Come)" held the number one spot, while moviegoers packed theaters for "Airport," the disaster film that launched a decade's worth of imitators. On August 17, the Soviet Union launched Venera 7 toward Venus, a spacecraft that would go on to become the first in history to successfully transmit data from the surface of another planet.
