On American radio, Three Dog Night's "Joy to the World" sat at number one, while television audiences were tuning into the new Emmy-winning comedy "All in the Family," which had just premiered on CBS. On the basketball court, the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Baltimore Bullets to claim the NBA championship, the same spring that NASA launched Mariner 9 toward Mars, setting it on course to become the first spacecraft to orbit another planet.
