On the radio, Dawn Featuring Tony Orlando's "Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree" was the dominant hit of the season, while "The Godfather" had just taken home the Oscar for Best Picture, drawing massive audiences who were still talking about Marlon Brando's performance. The New York Knicks claimed the NBA championship over the Los Angeles Lakers, and on May 14, NASA launched Skylab, the country's first space station, marking a significant new chapter in American space operations.
