By the winter of 1974, Nixon was in the White House and the federal minimum wage stood at $2.00/hr — but Secretary of State Henry Kissinger was actively shuttling between Middle Eastern capitals, working to broker disengagement agreements between Israel and its neighbors in the aftermath of the Yom Kippur War. On screens and bookshelves, Americans were gripped by "The Exorcist," which was still packing theaters after its late 1973 release, while Peter Benchley's novel "Jaws" sat atop the New York Times fiction bestseller list. The Philadelphia Flyers claimed the Stanley Cup that year, and on the other side of the world, Ricky Ponting was born in Tasmania, Australia, who would go on to become one of cricket's most decorated batsmen and a two-time World Cup-winning captain.
