On the cultural front, Paul Newman and Robert Redford's caper film "The Sting" had taken the Best Picture Oscar, and Peter Benchley's shark thriller "Jaws" was sitting atop the New York Times fiction bestseller list. The Boston Celtics claimed the NBA championship by defeating the Milwaukee Bucks, the same spring that Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's all-time home run record on April 8, hitting his 715th career homer before a packed crowd in Atlanta.
