On screens and bookshelves, Americans were gripped by "The Exorcist," which was still packing theaters after its late 1973 release, while Peter Benchley's novel "Jaws" sat atop the New York Times fiction bestseller list. The Philadelphia Flyers claimed the Stanley Cup that year, and on the other side of the world, Ricky Ponting was born in Tasmania, Australia, who would go on to become one of cricket's most decorated batsmen and a two-time World Cup-winning captain.
