A Big Mac cost $0.76 that summer of 1976, and the Dow Jones sat at 1,005 — the two halves of Vietnam were formally reunited into a single nation under Communist rule, marking the end of a chapter that had defined American foreign policy for two decades. On screens and turntables, audiences were lining up to see "The Omen" while Starland Vocal Band held the top spot on the charts with "Afternoon Delight." That summer, the United States sent athletes to the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada, where they returned with 34 gold, 35 silver, and 25 bronze medals, a total of 94, including seven perfect scores of 10.0 from Romanian gymnast Nadia Comăneci, whose performances in the gymnastics hall stopped crowds cold.
