That fall of 1976, gas ran $0.59 a gallon and Ford was in the White House — though Carter was closing in fast on election day, giving Americans a tight presidential race to follow heading into November. On television, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was winning Emmy Awards while Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life" dominated the cultural conversation, an album widely regarded even then as an instant landmark. The Cincinnati Reds swept the New York Yankees to claim the World Series that October, and on September 17th NASA rolled out the space shuttle Enterprise in Palmdale, California, marking the first time the public had laid eyes on the vehicle that would define the next era of American spaceflight.
