That fall of 1977, gas ran $0.62 a gallon and Carter was in the White House — the Egyptian President Anwar Sadat had just made a historic visit to Israel, the first Arab leader to do so, arriving in Jerusalem to personally address the Israeli parliament and push for a direct peace agreement. On American screens and turntables, "Happy Days" was the top-rated show on television while Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" sat at number one on the charts for weeks, becoming one of the best-selling singles of the decade. The New York Yankees took the World Series over the Los Angeles Dodgers that October, and astronomers marked the season with a significant discovery when scientist Charles Kowal identified 2060 Chiron, the first known asteroid orbiting in the outer solar system between Saturn and Uranus, opening an entirely new category of celestial object.
