That fall of 1978, gas ran $0.63 a gallon and Carter was in the White House — the Camp David Accords had just been signed, with Carter brokering a historic peace framework between Egypt's Anwar Sadat and Israel's Menachem Begin. On the radio, Exile's "Kiss You All Over" was the dominant hit of the season, while audiences were packing theaters to see "Animal House," the raucous college comedy that became one of the highest-grossing films of the year. The New York Yankees clinched the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers for the second straight year, and on October 8, Australian Ken Warby set the world water speed record at 317.6 mph in his jet-powered boat "Spirit of Australia" at Blowering Dam — a record that still stands today.
