On screens and turntables, Americans were watching "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" pack movie theaters while Player's "Baby Come Back" held the top spot on the charts. The New York Yankees had claimed the World Series title over the Los Angeles Dodgers that fall, and on February 27, 1978, the United States launched Navstar 1, the world's first GPS satellite, laying the foundation for a navigation system that would eventually change how every person on earth finds their way.
