That fall of 1979, gas ran $0.86 a gallon and Carter was in the White House — the Soviet Union's military presence in Cuba was straining U.S.-Soviet relations, with Secretary of State Vance warning Moscow that its troops there could jeopardize the SALT II arms treaty. On television, "Taxi" was winning the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, and Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" was sitting at number one on the charts, signaling the start of one of the biggest solo careers in pop history. The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles in seven games to win the World Series, and just weeks earlier, on September 7, ESPN had launched as the first cable channel dedicated entirely to sports, permanently changing how Americans would watch and follow athletics.
