A Big Mac cost $1.00 that summer of 1980, and the Dow Jones sat at 964 — while the U.S. Senate overrode President Carter's oil import fee veto 68 to 10, the first time a Senate controlled by a president's own party had rejected a veto since 1952. On screens and turntables, "The Empire Strikes Back" was packing theaters across the country and Paul McCartney and Wings held the top spot on the radio with "Coming Up (Live At Glasgow)." The 1980 Summer Olympics took place in Moscow that July, but Americans were not among the competitors — the United States led a boycott of the Games in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, sending no athletes and earning no medals.
