A Big Mac cost $1.20 that summer of 1982, and the Dow Jones sat at 1,047 — while Israel's invasion of Lebanon dominated front pages and American families tracked the conflict on the nightly news, daily life at home continued at its usual pace. On movie screens across the country, Steven Spielberg's "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" was breaking box office records, while The Human League's "Don't You Want Me" sat at the top of the pop charts for weeks running. On August 17, the first commercial compact discs rolled off a production line in Hanover, Germany, a manufacturing milestone that would fundamentally change how music was sold and heard for decades to come.
