By the winter of 1984, Reagan was in the White House and the federal minimum wage stood at $3.35/hr — the US and Soviet Union were locked in Cold War tension, with Konstantin Chernenko taking over as General Secretary of the Soviet Union following the death of Yuri Andropov in February, while American daily life continued at its usual pace, with groceries to buy, jobs to get to, and kids heading to school. At the movies, "Terms of Endearment" was drawing crowds to theaters, and on the radio, "Owner of a Lonely Heart" by Yes was the song playing in diners and on car stereos across the country. The Detroit Tigers had claimed the 1984 World Series title over the San Diego Padres, and that February, American athletes brought home 4 gold and 4 silver medals from the Winter Olympics held in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.
