A Big Mac cost $1.50 that summer of 1985, and the Dow Jones sat at 1,547 — and Live Aid concerts in London and Philadelphia drew over 1.5 billion television viewers and raised more than £50 million for famine relief in Ethiopia. On movie screens, "Back to the Future" was pulling crowds into theaters all summer, while "Dynasty" kept millions tuned in to prime-time television each week. On July 13, the Live Aid concerts marked a landmark moment in the history of large-scale humanitarian fundraising, with performers including David Bowie, Queen, and Madonna taking the stage across two continents in what organizers called the largest satellite television broadcast ever attempted.
