That fall of 1985, gas ran $1.12 a gallon and Reagan was in the White House — the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, recognizing doctors on both sides of the Cold War who had organized against the threat of nuclear conflict. On television, "The Golden Girls" had just debuted to strong ratings, and on the radio, Ready For The World were sitting at number one with "Oh Sheila." The Kansas City Royals closed out the fall by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, and just weeks earlier, a joint American-French expedition led by Robert Ballard had located the wreck of the RMS Titanic on the floor of the North Atlantic — more than 70 years after the ship went down.
