The New York Mets had just claimed the 1986 World Series title over the Boston Red Sox in a dramatic seven-game finish, and on January 28th, the nation came to a standstill when Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds after launch, killing all seven crew members including schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe in a moment that reshaped the future of American space travel.
