That fall of 1987, gas ran $0.90 a gallon and Reagan was in the White House — the U.S. and Soviet Union had just reached a landmark accord on an intermediate-range missile treaty, marking one of the most significant arms reduction agreements of the Cold War era. On television, "The Cosby Show" was the dominant program of the moment, while Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again" sat at the top of the charts. The Minnesota Twins claimed the World Series title over the St. Louis Cardinals, and in Moscow, 19-year-old West German pilot Mathias Rust stood trial for the May stunt in which he flew a small Cessna through Soviet air defenses and landed near Red Square.
