Gas cost $1.14 a gallon in the spring of 1991, and the Dow Jones stood at 3,169 — the country was still processing the end of the Gulf War, with American troops returning home and the United Nations passing resolutions to dismantle Iraq's chemical and biological weapons stockpile. On television, "Cheers" remained the top-rated show in the country, while "Dances with Wolves" had just taken home the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Natalie Cole's Grammy Album of the Year "Unforgettable... with Love" was playing on radio stations across the nation. The Chicago Bulls defeated the Los Angeles Lakers to claim their first NBA championship, the same spring that Israel launched Operation Solomon, a dramatic 36-hour airlift that brought more than 14,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel in a single covert mission.
