That fall of 1991, gas ran $1.14 a gallon and Bush was in the White House — the Middle East Peace Conference had just opened in Madrid, bringing Israeli and Arab leaders to the negotiating table for direct talks for the first time in history. On the radio, Mariah Carey's "Emotions" was sitting at number one, while audiences were filling theaters to see "The Fisher King," and at home, "Cheers" remained the country's top-rated show. The Minnesota Twins defeated the Atlanta Braves in the World Series, and in the scientific community, researcher Sumio Iijima published the first report on carbon nanotubes in the journal "Nature," laying the groundwork for an entirely new field of materials science.
