A Big Mac cost $2.19 that summer of 1992, and the Dow Jones sat at 3,301 — the Dow Jones sat at 3,301 — a figure that reflected a country still finding its footing after a mild recession, with Israel proposing a plan to grant Arabs self-rule in occupied territories and the Earth Summit in Rio drawing international attention to environmental policy debates.
