A Big Mac cost $2.28 that summer of 1993, and the Dow Jones sat at 3,754 — the United Nations was conducting airstrikes in Mogadishu as American forces hunted for Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. At the multiplex, Tom Hanks and Gene Hackman were drawing crowds to "The Firm," while on the radio SWV's "Weak" was holding the number one spot. On August 5, archaeologists announced the discovery of the Tel Dan Stele in northern Israel, the first physical artifact ever found confirming the existence of the biblical House of David, a landmark moment in the history of ancient Near Eastern archaeology.
