On television, "Frasier" had just launched its first season and was pulling in strong ratings alongside the long-running "60 Minutes," while Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" sat at the top of the charts for weeks on end, driven by her role in the film "The Bodyguard." The Chicago Bulls had claimed their third NBA championship the previous June by defeating the Phoenix Suns, and on December 10, id Software released "Doom," a first-person shooter that would go on to define PC gaming for years and introduce millions of Americans to online multiplayer competition.
