A Big Mac cost $2.30 that summer of 1994, and the Dow Jones sat at 3,834 — President Clinton had just ordered Pentagon action to aid Rwandan refugees, a humanitarian crisis unfolding on the other side of the world while most Americans were focused on their own summer routines. On the radio, All-4-One's "I Swear" was the dominant song of the season, and at the multiplex, "Forrest Gump" had just opened and was pulling in record crowds. That June, NASA formally opened its Space Station Processing Facility at Kennedy Space Center, the dedicated manufacturing hub that would be used to assemble hardware for the International Space Station — a landmark step toward what would become the largest structure humans ever placed in orbit.
