Gas cost $1.15 a gallon in the spring of 1995, and the Dow Jones stood at 5,117 — a suicide bombing by Arab militants killed six Israeli soldiers in Gaza, drawing international attention to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. On American screens and airwaves, "Seinfeld" remained the country's most-watched television show while "This Is How We Do It" by Montell Jordan held the top spot on the charts. The Houston Rockets defeated the Orlando Magic to claim the NBA championship that June, and earlier in the spring, astronaut Norman Thagard made history by becoming the first American to launch into space aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, lifting off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
