On American radio, Puff Daddy and Mase dominated the airwaves with "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down," while on bookshelves John Grisham's "The Partner" held the top spot on the fiction bestseller list. The Chicago Bulls, led by Michael Jordan, claimed their fifth NBA championship by defeating the Utah Jazz, the same spring that IBM's Deep Blue made history by defeating world chess champion Garry Kasparov in a rematch — the first time a computer had ever beaten a reigning world champion in a formal match.
