By the winter of 2001, Bush was in the White House and the federal minimum wage stood at $5.15/hr — the country was in the early weeks of George W. Bush's presidency, with his newly completed cabinet taking shape and bipartisan appointments drawing attention in Washington. On the pop charts, Destiny's Child held the top spot with "Independent Women Part I," while David McCullough's biography "John Adams" was a fixture on the nonfiction bestseller lists. The Los Angeles Lakers had just claimed the NBA championship over the Philadelphia 76ers, and on January 9th, Apple launched iTunes, a media library and player software that would permanently change how Americans organized and consumed music.
