On the pop charts, Destiny's Child held the top spot with "Independent Women Part I," while David McCullough's biography "John Adams" was a fixture on the nonfiction bestseller lists. The Los Angeles Lakers had just claimed the NBA championship over the Philadelphia 76ers, and on January 9th, Apple launched iTunes, a media library and player software that would permanently change how Americans organized and consumed music.
