That fall of 2001, gas ran $1.46 a gallon and Bush was in the White House — the U.S. had launched airstrikes against Taliban-controlled Afghanistan following the September 11 attacks, opening a military campaign that would define the decade. Alicia Keys was at the top of the charts with "Fallin'," and David McCullough's "John Adams" was the nonfiction book Americans were reading that season. The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the New York Yankees in seven games to win the World Series, and the Hubble Space Telescope made history by detecting the first atmosphere ever confirmed on a planet outside our solar system.
