By the winter of 2002, Bush was in the White House and the federal minimum wage stood at $5.15/hr — the country was still processing the aftermath of September 11th, with President Bush pushing for a major increase in military spending and U.S. airstrikes actively supporting coalition forces in Afghanistan. On the cultural front, Usher's "U Got It Bad" was topping the charts while "A Beautiful Mind" took home the Oscar for Best Picture, and Americans were tuning in weekly to "Everybody Loves Raymond" and settling in with John Grisham's latest thriller "The Summons." The Los Angeles Lakers had just claimed the NBA championship over the New Jersey Nets, and that same winter the country hosted the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, where U.S. athletes brought home 34 total medals, including 10 gold.
