Gas cost $1.36 a gallon in the spring of 2002, and the Dow Jones stood at 8,342 — both domestic markets and American foreign policy remained focused on escalating violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with President Bush pressing Israel to withdraw forces from the West Bank while dispatching Secretary of State Colin Powell to the region. On the pop charts, Jennifer Lopez and Ja Rule held the number one spot with "Ain't It Funny," while "A Beautiful Mind" took home the Oscar for Best Picture, and "The West Wing" and "Everybody Loves Raymond" dominated the Emmy Awards for drama and comedy. The Los Angeles Lakers claimed their third straight NBA championship by defeating the New Jersey Nets, the same spring that South African Mark Shuttleworth became the first African space tourist, launching aboard the Soyuz TM-34 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on April 25.
