On television, Americans were watching "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and reading Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code," which sat at the top of the fiction bestseller lists week after week. The Florida Marlins pulled off a World Series upset over the New York Yankees that October, and just days before, China had made history by launching "Shenzhou 5," becoming only the third country ever to send a human being into space under its own power.
