That fall of 2008, gas ran $3.27 a gallon and Bush was in the White House — the financial crisis was already reshaping the economy, with major banks collapsing and Congress passing a $700 billion bailout package in an effort to stabilize the markets. On television, "Mad Men" was winning the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, and T.I.'s "Whatever You Like" sat at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series over the Tampa Bay Rays, and on September 28, SpaceX made history when the Falcon 1 became the first privately developed rocket to successfully reach orbit.
