By the winter of 2009, Obama was in the White House and the federal minimum wage stood at $7.25/hr — the country was also navigating a deep recession, with unemployment climbing toward 10 percent and Congress debating a major stimulus package to stabilize the economy. On screen and on the radio, "Slumdog Millionaire" took home the Oscar for Best Picture while "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga featuring Colby O'Donis held the number one spot on the charts. The New York Yankees had just won the World Series over the Philadelphia Phillies, and on January 15, US Airways Flight 1549 made an emergency water landing on the Hudson River with all 155 people on board rescued safely, an event quickly dubbed the Miracle on the Hudson.
