Gas cost $2.35 a gallon in the spring of 2009, and the Dow Jones stood at 10,428 — both figures reflecting an economy still climbing back from the financial crisis that had peaked the previous fall. On movie screens, "Slumdog Millionaire" had just taken home the Oscar for Best Picture, and Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" was sitting at number one on the charts as Americans went about their daily routines. The Los Angeles Lakers claimed the NBA championship that June by defeating the Orlando Magic, the same spring that NASA launched the Kepler Mission from Cape Canaveral, sending into orbit a space telescope designed to search for Earth-like planets orbiting distant stars in the Milky Way galaxy.
