By the winter of 2011, Obama was in the White House and the federal minimum wage stood at $7.25/hr — the Arab Spring was reshaping the Middle East, as mass protests in Egypt forced the military to negotiate Hosni Mubarak's exit from power after nearly 30 years in office. On screens and shelves, Americans were watching "Modern Family" take home the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series while Kathryn Stockett's novel "The Help" held the top spot on the New York Times fiction bestseller list for months on end. The Boston Bruins claimed the Stanley Cup that year, defeating the Vancouver Canucks in seven games, while halfway around the world, the island nation of Samoa made international headlines by skipping an entire calendar day — jumping straight from December 29 to December 31 — after crossing to the other side of the International Date Line to better align with its key trading partners in Australia and New Zealand.
